What Is An Air Source Heat Pump And How Does It Work?
You may not be aware of how your current boiler works. But, if you’re interested in making the switch, it’s worth knowing how air source heat pumps work and understanding their advantages over traditional boilers.
This new form of low-carbon heating takes warm air from outside to heat your home and water even on days as cold as -15c. Sounds like magic, right?
Here’s the science that makes it reality:
The pump draws air in from outside.
Using a refrigerant air temperature is extracted.
It is then compressed, warming the air.
Heat is transferred into your radiators, underfloor heating, and hot water tank.
This system works reliably all year round, even when temperatures reach below freezing, and as low as -15c.
Did we mention it’s quiet? Once it’s installed, your air source heat pump will operate without fuss, you won’t even notice it. In the meantime, your home will remain warm and cosy, your bills will plummet, and your carbon footprint will be significantly reduced.
So, if you’re planning to replace your old boiler, you’re renovating, or you’re about to move home, installing an air source heat pump is a no brainer. Keep reading as we guide you through choosing the right system for you.

Will an Air Source Heat Pump Save Me Money on My Energy Bill?
Switching from fossil fuels to an air source heat pump can reduce your annual energy bill by as much as £780.
How much you’ll save depends on the design of your heat pump, how it is operated, the system you’re replacing, and how well your home is insulated.
Get in touch with us today to see how much you could save with the installation of an air source heat pump.
Do You Need a Hot Water Cylinder?
Unlike a combi boiler, a heat pump doesn’t create hot water on demand instantaneously. Instead, you will need a water cylinder to store the hot water it provides until you use it. The size of the cylinder required depends on the amount of hot water your family uses. Most cylinders fit in a 120x50cm cupboard.

Installing a Heat Pump Just Got Easier
In May 2025, the government made it easier to install an air source heat pump by removing a planning restriction that meant heat pumps needed to be one metre from a neighbour's property.
This change is part of the government’s Warm Homes Plan, which makes it easier for millions of UK households to lower their household bills and planet warming emissions.
